On A Personal Note

I can't remember a time when I was not interested in photography. As a child I loved poring through my grandfather's "snap-shot" albums. I smile when I think of the rolls of precious film I squandered on seagulls following a B.C. ferry on my first big trip away from my Manitoba home. For me, there is a sense of adventure, exploration and discovery in looking for the essence of the subject, light, texture and feeling that can be captured in a photograph.

In explorations with my camera I feel that I am following instinctively the spirit that animated my grandfather's images, the passion to discover and create a photograph that takes on a life of its own.......to become for the viewer a magnet for focused attention, an intriguing visual mystery, an invitation to transcend reality or enter reality more deeply and a catalyst for ideas stories and dreams. In other words, I am mystified and touched by the power of a photograph to be a communication corridor and a touchstone for both the photographer and the viewer.

I admire greatly two renowned Canadian photographers, Courtney Milne and Freeman Patterson and I feel fortunate to have attended several of their workshops. One of Freeman Patterson's excellent books is titled "Photography For The Joy Of It".  I could not agree more. My daughter Jillian's photo of me on this page is further evidence. Why do I love to take photographs and share my photographs with others? For the joy of it.

I do hope that you will enjoy visiting my photo gallery now and as it grows and develops over the months ahead.
